Chapter 14

Settled back into the seat of her private plane, Kari’s eyes closed to await the old-fashioned rotary dialing sound on her phone that alerted her Dr. Fruit was calling for their Facetime session. When she accepted, she smiled and he did too, the trust and fondness between the two apparent.

“It’s the diggity doctor! How you doing Dr. Fruit?” she asked and they both chuckled.

“I should be asking you that, Karisma Montgomery. How did your performances go?”

“Great performances; we were on fire. We’ve been having some trouble with Tessa though. She twisted her ankle and had to be helped from the stage. She was under the influence again. It’s been happening a lot lately…”

“How does that make you feel?”

“What? That she was lit, out of step, or twisted her ankle?”

“Well let’s start with her being wasted.” He leaned in closer to the screen.

“Well...no one has changed their behavior just because I went to rehab. I haven’t asked them to. My problem is my problem and they have their own.”

“So, are you saying you aren’t bothered by the alcohol and drugs around you?”

“If I was, I certainly couldn’t be in this business. They’re everywhere, Doc. It’s just that some of us function better while under the influence than others.”

“So, the free-flowing drugs don’t tempt you?”

“No. I don’t need drugs to cope with the pressure of being a performer, Dr. Fruit,” she said then paused. “It was that man.”

“The one you shot.”

She nodded. “I still have a hard time talking about it. But with everything else I’ve been through you’d think it’d be easy.”

“No, not easy. You have been through some things most people haven’t, and that hasn’t been without profundity to you. How have you been sleeping?”

“Better. Best when Paolo’s around.”

The doctor nodded. “The last time we talked, you spoke about how Paolo couldn’t protect you.”

“When we got married, he said he’d always protect me... But he didn’t. I was kidnapped, drugged—almost killed with the stuff they were poisoning me with. They killed our baby...”

“Yet you sleep better when he’s around. You still look to him for protection.”

“I have a lot of people to protect me, Doc,” she said.

“Oh. So, you don’t need Paolo’s protection?”

“I feel better when he’s around. I'm in love with him. We haven’t been married long. I’m on my way to Italy right now to be with him, check on his father. I miss him.”

“Do you resent Paolo for being kidnapped, Karisma?”

“We discussed this already,” she said dismissively at first, but quickly back peddled. “I’m sorry, Dr. Fruit, I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just that...the intruder wasn’t his fault. But I was kidnapped as a direct result of my connection to him. In the last couple of years, I've been through some hellafied stuff…” she looked away. “Do you think people can be so damaged by things that they can’t recover?”

“No, I don’t. I truly believe in our resilience. We humans can recover from just about anything.”

“Huh.”

“What’s that?”

“I’m moving on as if nothing has happened...as if I’ve gotten over it.
